Downtown, from the project The Last Days of Shishmaref, 2007
Print size: 22 x 32 cm including white border
“This is the central square on the island of Shishmaref, a community of about 600 Inupiaq off the northwest coast of Alaska, where I stayed for several weeks in 2007. Due to global warming, the island’s protective permafrost layer has been melting for many years, resulting in the island’s progressive erosion.
Combining portraiture, landscapes, details of interiors and village tableaux, I created a portrait of this close-knit community – a community balancing between a past rooted in tradition and an uncertain future.”
