"Pedro de Alvarado conquered Guatemala in 1525. In 2019, almost 500 years after the first battle of the conquest, I made a series of trips that followed in his footsteps, culminating in a body of work called Tonatiuh – meaning 'The Sun', which was the nickname that the Tlaxcalan people gave de Alvarado.
"In 1534, de Alvarado travelled to Ecuador in search of Pizarro's gold – my own journey tries to understand what happened to the thousands of Mayan warriors he left behind in the freezing Andes."
