DUST #3, 2023

"Inspired in part by my own experience of motherhood, DUST #3 explores the relationship of Dinka women—who act as mediums and custodians to the earth—to the rupturing history of Christianity and colonialism.

"Growing up in Melbourne around earlier generations of South Sudanese, I saw how rites of birth and death were often shrouded in secrecy because of the powerful ways in which the Church and colonial law denied both tradition and religious syncretism. In the series, the deep red-orange soil and its dust represent a place opposite to heaven, to which Dinka Bor keep a constant connection as the living. It also prompts memories of migration, conjuring images of South Sudanese dirt roads, or of the red earth of the Australian landscape."
