Mustapha Kamara, Pewama community in Sierra Leone, 2021

"My 2021 Wata Na Life series considers the effects of climate change on Sierra Leonean communities. In Pujehun District, the Pewama community farms palm nuts, vegetables, and fruits in order to survive, as well as relying on fishing. Although Pewama had a well installed years ago, it does not provide enough water to service the growing community. They now need another to sustain themselves and their farming practices. With global warming, the community has noticed that their water source dries up much faster—even more so in the dry season.

"This image shows Mustapha Kamara, a representative of the Pewama community youth group, who regularly contributes to the maintenance of the community’s water well. He is pictured holding a basket of palm kernels, which will be processed to produce palm oil: an important product for the local community and economy."
