"I met this Kazakh man one day in the mountains of Ulastai, on the outskirts of Urumqi. Whenever I return home, I like to wander through those hills—walking, looking, taking a few photographs. That day, the weather wasn’t good: with heavy clouds and strong winds. I was about to head back when he appeared at the bend in the road, riding slowly through the muted landscape. I didn’t know where he had come from or where he was going. The bright bouquet strapped to the back of his motorcycle looked almost surreal against the grey tones of the mountains—an unexpected softness in the middle of a rough, windy afternoon."
